Barcelona Defender Andreas Christensen Set to Renew Contract Until 2028
June 20, 2026 · David Ortega
Danish defender Andreas Christensen is set to renew his contract with FC Barcelona until 2028, rejecting offers from clubs in England and Italy. Despite injury setbacks, the club values his professionalism and attitude.
In a significant development, Fabrizio Romano reports that Danish defender Andreas Christensen is poised to sign a new contract with FC Barcelona. The 30-year-old centre-back's current deal is set to expire on June 30, but he will extend it by two years until 2028. Christensen joined Barcelona in 2022 as a free agent after leaving Chelsea, where he had played an essential role in his debut season, contributing to the club's La Liga title under former manager Xavi Hernandez.

However, injuries have hindered his progress, limiting his appearances as a regular starter in the defense. Last season, he faced challenges including a partial ACL rupture in December, which kept him sidelined for much of the latter part of the campaign. This resulted in only 18 first-team appearances during the 2025/26 season. Despite these setbacks, Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has consistently shown confidence in Christensen, and his professionalism has earned him respect within the club.
Barcelona's president-elect, Joan Laporta, made it a priority to offer the defender a new contract despite his injury history. An agreement has been reached, and the new contract is expected to be signed soon. Christensen opted to reject proposals from two clubs in England and Italy to stay with Barcelona. His new deal will likely see a reduction in his salary, with a fixed salary of around €5 million gross per season, down from approximately €12 million. However, performance-related bonuses could increase his earnings by an additional €3-4 million if he becomes a key player under Flick, starting at least 60% of available matches. To date, Christensen has made 98 appearances for Barcelona, scoring five goals and providing three assists across four seasons.
