Colombia and Portugal Draw in World Cup Clash, Eye Knockout Stage
June 29, 2026 · Rubén Pérez
Colombia and Portugal played to a goalless draw in a high-stakes World Cup match, with Colombia showcasing strong performance despite a controversial offside call denying them a late goal.
Expectations were SKY-HIGH. Much like the heat in Miami. Indeed, Colombia versus Portugal on Saturday night (27) was a high-level match at Hard Rock Stadium, crucial for first place in World Cup Group K. The match ended goalless but delivered plenty of excitement thanks to Colombia's EXCELLENT performance, which included a razor-thin offside call that saved CR7 & Co. in the 91st minute.
The first half featured a dominant Colombia for the opening 20 minutes, with lots of movement, runs in behind, and solid organization with and without the ball, reflecting their earlier form in the tournament. Goalkeeper Diogo Costa was tested, and Rúben Neves cleared what appeared to be a sure goal. Portugal improved as the match progressed and forced Camilo Vargas into a great save, but they fell short of expectations given their talented squad.

In the final minutes, the action was end-to-end, but no goals materialized. Colombia continued to attack, with Roberto Martínez's strategies failing to impact Portugal. The second half saw a reinvigorated Colombia, who kept creating chances, with standout performances from James and Jhon Arias. Despite their dominance, a semi-automated offside call in the 91st minute denied Colombia a late celebration as Davinson Sánchez thought he had scored.
Colombia emerged as group leaders with seven points and will face Ghana, the third-placed team from Group L, in the knockout stage. Portugal, finishing with five points, will take on Croatia, the runners-up in the same group, in a clash featuring two Real Madrid legends, CR7 and Modric. In the group's other match, the Democratic Republic of the Congo made history by defeating Uzbekistan 3-1, securing their first-ever trip to the knockout stage where they will face England, confirming South Korea's elimination and setting up a match where Senegal will face Belgium.
