FIFA Demands Payment After Ticketing Error at World Cup 2026
June 5, 2026 · Santiago Suárez
FIFA has acknowledged a mistake that allowed 60 fans to obtain World Cup tickets for free, now requiring them to pay or lose their seats.
FIFA has admitted to an error on its website that allowed 60 fans to mistakenly receive free tickets for World Cup group stage matches in Toronto. The world football governing body is now requiring those fans to pay for the tickets in full within seven days or risk losing their seats. FIFA, in a statement, expressed regret for any inconvenience caused and clarified that the error stemmed from a previous payment issue during the checkout process.
The affected fans were informed of the error on Wednesday, June 3, and have been given the opportunity to repurchase their tickets at the correct price. This incident is just the latest in a series of ticketing issues facing FIFA, as the World Cup, hosted in Canada, the United States, and Mexico, approaches its start on June 11.

Ticket Talk Network, a social media platform highlighting ticketing errors, shared a letter confirming the seven-day payment deadline. This comes amid ongoing scrutiny of FIFA's ticketing practices, including an investigation by the attorneys general of New York and New Jersey into allegations of artificially inflated prices and misleading information for fans. FIFA's current ticket sales strategy involves 'variable pricing,' allowing ticket prices to adjust based on demand and availability.
Despite a promise of a sold-out event, tickets remain available less than a week before the tournament begins. FIFA's final open sales window began in April, with the possibility of releasing more tickets up until the tournament kicks off.
