FIFA's Ticketing Blunder: Fans Sold Free World Cup Tickets
June 5, 2026 · David Gómez
FIFA mistakenly sold free tickets to around 60 fans for the upcoming World Cup, later inviting them to pay the correct price due to a prior payment issue.
FIFA has recently faced criticism over its ticketing policies for the upcoming World Cup, but this week they encountered a different kind of error. Approximately 60 fans were accidentally sold free tickets to a World Cup match due to a payment issue during the checkout process. In response, FIFA invited these fans to complete the payment for the tickets they initially received without charge.
A fan's inquiry on social media prompted FIFA to issue a statement acknowledging the mistake. "FIFA can confirm that approximately 60 FIFA World Cup 2026 fans received a communication on Wednesday, 3 June regarding tickets that had been allocated at no charge (0 USD) due to a prior payment issue during the checkout process," the statement read. "The tickets requested by these fans remain reserved, and the affected fans have been invited to complete payment of the correct amount. FIFA regrets the error and any inconvenience caused."
This unexpected situation highlights the complexities and challenges in handling ticketing for a global event like the World Cup, where even minor errors can lead to significant confusion among fans.
