Grêmio's Focus Shifts After Arthur's Departure
June 22, 2026 · Javier Navarro
Grêmio is not prioritizing the signing of a new defensive midfielder after Arthur's departure, focusing instead on other positions due to financial constraints.
Grêmio experienced the departure of Arthur midway through the season, but the club has determined that signing a new defensive midfielder will not be a primary focus for the remainder of the year. Given their financial difficulties, the management has opted to direct their efforts towards acquiring reinforcements for the right-back position and enhancing their creative midfield options.

Currently, Grêmio's squad includes six players capable of playing in the midfield role. Young prospect Juan Nardoni, who was a significant investment earlier this year and has recently returned from injury, is expected to take on the responsibility left by Arthur. Additionally, the coaching staff sees Villasanti as a vital asset for this position. Following his recovery from a serious knee injury that sidelined him during the FIFA World Cup, the Paraguayan player is now considered a key leader in the locker room.
Other players in contention for the role include Leo Pérez, Noriega, Tiaguinho, and Dodi, all of whom bring experience to the midfield. Young academy talent Zortéa is also viewed as a potential option. According to Grêmio's vice president of football, Rafael Lima, the chances of acquiring a new defensive midfielder are extremely low due to budgetary constraints, unless an exceptional opportunity presents itself in the transfer market.
