Sergio Aguero Endorses Julian Alvarez as Ideal Barcelona Signing
June 25, 2026 · Fernando Vargas
Sergio Aguero praises Julian Alvarez as a perfect fit for Barcelona, emphasizing his versatility and the need for clubs to address player dissatisfaction.
The Julian Alvarez transfer saga is heating up as the young forward has expressed that a move might be the best option for his future. Barcelona is reportedly one of the clubs interested in the Atletico Madrid striker, and opinions from various football figures are beginning to surface. Notably, former Barcelona and Atletico Madrid forward Sergio Aguero has shared his thoughts on why Alvarez would thrive at the Catalan club.
Aguero spoke on the Jijantes channel, highlighting Alvarez's playing style and versatility as key attributes that would make him a fantastic addition to Barcelona. "Julian would fit in at many clubs, but he’d be a spectacular fit at Barça because of his style of play. He’s a fantastic player—someone who can play anywhere on the field and is a complete offensive threat," Aguero stated. He emphasized that Alvarez's ability to function in various attacking roles provides coaches with significant tactical options.
"It’s good to have players like that. He’s an offensive player—a winger, a forward, an attacking midfielder. You have a wild card; you can use him when others get injured," Aguero added. This adaptability is seen as crucial for any team looking to optimize their attacking strategy. Aguero also addressed Alvarez's recent public statements regarding his desire to leave Atletico Madrid, suggesting that the player’s honesty was the best course of action. "The club isn’t going to say anything, so the player has no choice but to be sincere—he’s trying to be honest. He says he met with the club and they decided that a transfer is the best option," he remarked.

While Aguero supports Alvarez's candidness, he also recognizes the complexities involved in potential negotiations. He noted that Atletico Madrid holds a strong position due to the player's contract and substantial release clause. "With that clause, the decision lies with the club. The club will decide whether or not to sell you, and he, to be honest, ended up saying as much, and that’s for the best," Aguero explained.
Aguero expressed concern over the implications of keeping an unhappy player, asserting that clubs should strive to find solutions in such situations. "When a player isn’t happy, each club takes the stance it wants to take and the player ends up losing out," he stated. He suggested that if a player is uncomfortable, whether due to city life or team dynamics, the club should aim to facilitate a transfer to avoid ongoing discontent.
Lastly, Aguero brushed aside concerns regarding Barcelona's financial capability to complete a deal for Alvarez, explaining that the club could negotiate payment terms that are manageable over several years. "Obviously, they can’t pay 120, 200 or 300 million, but they reach agreements to pay a little each year. Barça can pay it off over five or six years, and that way they’ll eventually pay it off in full," he concluded.
