4 Takeaways From Ghana's Dramatic Win Over Panama At World Cup
June 19, 2026 · Pilar Ríos
Ghana secured a dramatic late victory over Panama in the World Cup, with Caleb Yirenkyi scoring the winner in stoppage time. Panama's chances of advancing are now slim, while Ghana's win improves their position.
For over 90 minutes, Ghana and Panama seemed destined for a scoreless draw. However, deep into stoppage time, Caleb Yirenkyi finished a brilliant counterattack led by Brandon Thomas-Asante, sealing a dramatic victory for Ghana and keeping their hopes of advancing alive in a challenging group.
The match unfolded as a tale of two halves, with Panama dominating the first half while Ghana struggled. The tide turned in the second half, leading to Ghana's well-deserved winner.
Panama's path to advancement is now extremely difficult, requiring a win in their remaining matches against England and Croatia, which seems unlikely.
This win positions Ghana favorably, as eight of the twelve third-placed teams will progress. A draw against either England or Croatia would be a significant result, but Ghana must also be aware of the goal differential tiebreaker.
Here are my takeaways from the game:
1. It Was A Rough First Half
Both teams faced challenges in creating offensive opportunities. Ghana didn’t test Panama's goalkeeper Orlando Mosquera until the 48th minute. Meanwhile, Panama struggled to get veteran forward Cecilio Waterman involved, who had only 13 touches before being substituted. The rainy conditions might have contributed, but both teams appeared tentative, particularly Ghana, which lacked intensity early on.

2. Thomas-Asante And The Subs Changed Everything
As the second half progressed, the match saw a spike in chances and urgency. The introduction of substitutes Brandon Thomas-Asante, Abdul Fatawu, and Benjamin Asare significantly improved Ghana's attack. Thomas-Asante emerged as the most dangerous player on the field, enhancing Ghana’s counterattacks after a successful season that saw him score 13 goals and assist four times for Coventry.
3. Advantage Goes To The New Coach
A key storyline was the contrasting experience of the coaches. Ghana's Carlos Queiroz was an emergency hire just months before the tournament, while Panama's Thomas Christiansen has been in charge since 2020. Despite a shaky start, Queiroz managed to tighten the team's defense and effectively utilized his substitutes to secure the win, demonstrating his coaching acumen.
Conversely, Christiansen's decision to start an older squad has raised concerns about the team's predictability and lack of fresh talent, especially after failing to capitalize on their first-half superiority.
4. Benching The Captain Worked Out … For Now
Christiansen's decision to bench veterans like captain Aníbal Godoy was bold. Although it allowed for a more dynamic midfield approach, it also meant missing the leadership and experience that Godoy brings. His late introduction came as Ghana began to find their rhythm, raising questions about earlier involvement.

Ghana’s late winner not only boosts their chances of advancing but also revitalizes their campaign in the World Cup, making their upcoming fixtures against England and Croatia crucial for their aspirations.
