The DFL has confirmed the release date for the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga schedules for the 2026/27 season. The 2. Bundesliga will kick off on August 7, while the Bundesliga starts on August 28. The schedule takes into account international commitments and safety regulations.
The DFL has officially announced that the schedules for the Bundesliga and 2. Bundesliga for the 2026/27 season will be made public on July 2, exactly one month from now. Some key dates have already been set. The 2. Bundesliga will commence on August 7, starting with a Friday night match. Last season, Schalke secured their ascent back to the top tier with a 2-1 home victory against Hertha, laying the groundwork for their promotion.
The Bundesliga will begin three weeks later, on August 28, kicking off its 64th season. For the planning of these schedules, a specialized software has been utilized for several years. This technology is essential to accommodate the numerous requirements that need to be considered.

The framework includes directives from municipalities, security authorities, the Central Information Office for Sports Operations (ZIS), as well as requests from clubs and stadium operators. Hundreds of schedule variations are examined, with many ultimately discarded. The published schedule will initially indicate which clubs will face each other on specific match days, while precise kickoff times will be determined incrementally throughout the season due to various factors, including European competition commitments.
The DFL states that international tournaments and the DFB-Pokal are significant reasons why detailed scheduling occurs gradually. To ensure adequate recovery time for teams participating in international matches, a Bundesliga matchday is typically scheduled only after confirming when each club's international commitments are and which teams are still in the DFB-Pokal. Generally, a minimum two-day break must be maintained before and after international matches.
Key dates to note include: Bundesliga, Matchday 1: August 28-30, 2026; Bundesliga, Matchday 34: May 22, 2027; 2. Bundesliga, Matchday 1: August 7-9, 2026; 2. Bundesliga, Matchday 34: May 23, 2027; Relegation Playoffs (First Legs): May 27-28, 2027; Relegation Playoffs (Second Legs): May 31 - June 1, 2027.
