Connah's Quay Hold FC Ballkani to Stalemate in Conference League
Connah's Quay Nomads delivered a disciplined and resilient performance to secure a goalless draw against FC Ballkani of Kosovo in the first leg of their Uefa Conference League qualifier. The match, held in Colwyn Bay, saw both teams fighting hard to gain an upper hand as they look to progress further in this European competition. As Cymru Premier runners-up from the previous season, Connah's Quay showed their tactical prowess against a team with more experience at this level, as FC Ballkani have previously competed in the group stages of the tournament. Under the new management of John Disney, who was at the helm for his first European match, the young Nomads side played with confidence and organization. The Welsh outfit will travel to Kosovo on equal footing for the second leg, which promises to be a decisive encounter. Scheduled for Thursday, July 16, the winner will advance to face either Bohemians of Ireland or St Joseph's of Malta in the subsequent round. The match was closely contested from the start. Connah's Quay goalkeeper Chris Renshaw was tested early, managing to parry an awkwardly bouncing ball over the bar. Captain James Jones was pivotal in defense, making a crucial tackle on Valentin Serebe to prevent Ballkani from taking an early lead. In attack, the Nomads had their opportunities to score. Michael Stone nearly converted a header following a precise cross from Max Woodock. Harry Franklin also found himself in a promising position shortly after halftime, but his header was caught comfortably by Ballkani's goalkeeper, Adnan Golubovic. Newcomer Joseph Ferguson was another standout for the home side, although Golubovic was up to the task to deny his attempts. As the game progressed, Connah's Quay looked the stronger side, particularly during the second half. However, Ballkani nearly snatched a late victory, but Anel Sabanadzovic's shot went wide, much to the relief of the Nomads. Looking ahead, Connah's Quay will aim to build on this solid display in the return fixture. The team will need to maintain their composure and capitalise on their chances to progress further in the competition. Fans can expect a thrilling encounter as both sides seek to make their mark in the Uefa Conference League.Read more on our latest coverage and stay tuned for updates on what happens next.
