In a surprising move, Ecuador has decided to change its team captain mid-way through the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Veteran forward Enner Valencia, 36, has passed on the captain's armband to Moises Caicedo, a rising star at Chelsea. This announcement comes just before Ecuador's crucial Round of 32 match against Mexico. Valencia, who has been a key figure for Ecuador with 49 goals in 108 international appearances, expressed his support for Caicedo in an emotional speech to the team. "The only thing I care about at the end of the match is giving you all a hug, and I feel it will be a hug of joy because it will be the hug of qualification," Valencia stated. Calling Caicedo to the forefront, he recalled his own appointment as captain in Argentina, emphasizing the responsibility that comes with the role. "I don't want to be remembered for my goals but for being a great person," Valencia said, handing over the leadership role to Caicedo. "Brother, this armband is yours. We are all that leader the teammate next to us needs. You are that leader," he encouraged. Moises Caicedo, who has scored three goals in 64 appearances for Ecuador, now takes on this mantle with Valencia's blessing.
