Background
David De Gea, once a key player for Fiorentina, has seen a significant decline in performance since his first season in Italy. His current struggles have placed the Serie A club in a precarious position, as they are the only team without a clean sheet this season. The ongoing issues with De Gea's form could influence Fiorentina's strategy moving forward.
Why this matters
Fiorentina's struggles with David De Gea in goal are critical as they seek to improve their defensive record in Serie A. With 17 goals conceded and no clean sheets this season, the team's defensive frailties are becoming a major concern for their season outlook. The criticism surrounding De Gea's performance could impact team morale and their ability to compete effectively in upcoming matches.

- David De Gea remains central to Fiorentina's plans.
Analyzing the statistics reveals further insights into Fiorentina's defensive woes. The team has an expected goals against (xG) of 9.7, which suggests that they are not conceding high-quality chances frequently enough to justify the number of goals allowed. This discrepancy is further emphasized by the expected goals on target conceded (xGOT) statistic, where De Gea's performance is notably poor. His xGOT stands at -3.42, the lowest among Serie A goalkeepers, meaning opponents have converted approximately 45% of their shots on target into goals against Fiorentina.
The club's decision not to address the goalkeeping issue during the summer transfer window, despite spending nearly 150 million euros, has been brought into question. If De Gea's experience and reputation made him undroppable, it would have been prudent to acquire a capable backup, perhaps someone like Tommaso Martinelli, to step in if needed. A comparison is drawn with Inter Milan's 2022 decision to replace veteran Samir Handanovic with the younger André Onana, which proved successful.
This situation emphasizes that no player should be deemed untouchable, especially within a club like Fiorentina that aims to compete at the highest levels. To salvage their season, Fiorentina may need to reconsider their current strategies and be willing to challenge established hierarchies within the squad.
What happens next
Fiorentina will need to address their goalkeeping dilemma quickly, as continued poor performances from De Gea could lead to further scrutiny from fans and analysts alike. The club may consider bringing in a backup goalkeeper during the January transfer window to provide competition and potentially improve their defensive solidity. As the season progresses, the match impact of De Gea's form will be crucial for Fiorentina's aspirations in Serie A.
