Flamengo's José Boto Warns Palestra About Premier League Move

In an interview with SportWeek, Flamengo's sporting director, José Boto, shared his perspective on Marco Palestra's decision to leave Italian football for Chelsea, after being pursued by Inter for a considerable time. Boto acknowledged the appeal of the Premier League but warned that it doesn't always represent the ideal path for emerging talents. "The Premier League is every youngster's dream, partly because it offers higher salaries. However, one might think they're making a significant leap forward, only to end up taking two steps backward," Boto explained. During the interview, he also touched upon the evolution of scouting and the increasing use of algorithms and big data in player assessments. Boto recounted an episode involving one of Pep Guardiola's assistants, who once remarked: 'In football, it's now more about the side dish than the main course.' While acknowledging the importance of technological tools, Boto emphasized that live observation remains irreplaceable. "Football is a business, but a unique one, driven by emotions. A player's mood can affect performance, depending on whether they're playing at San Siro or a small stadium. That's why players must always be seen live," he concluded.
