Games to Watch in the Scottish League Cup Group Stages
As the World Cup fades from memory, Scottish football fans are gearing up for the domestic season's kick-off with the first-round group stages of the Premier Sports Cup. Starting this Saturday, four Scottish Premiership teams will be in action, setting the stage for what promises to be an exciting tournament.Holders St Mirren will begin their title defense away at Dumbarton. The Paisley side had a remarkable journey last season, clinching the trophy in December by defeating Celtic 3-1 at Hampden. Their campaign was tumultuous, especially after the departure of manager Stephen Robinson to Aberdeen in March. Craig McLeish took over the reins, guiding St Mirren through their remaining fixtures, which included a dramatic Scottish Cup semi-final against Celtic. Although the Buddies fought back from two goals down, they ultimately succumbed to a 6-2 defeat, ending their cup aspirations. However, McLeish secured their Premiership survival with a 2-1 aggregate victory over Partick Thistle in the play-off final, solidifying his position as the permanent manager. St Mirren will be eager to start their League Cup journey positively against Dumbarton at 15:00 BST, while the other Group C match sees East Kilbride take on Scottish Cup finalists Dunfermline Athletic.

In another key fixture, Dundee will look to avenge their early exit from last year's competition when they face Airdrieonians, who handed them a 1-0 defeat at Dens Park. Dundee, under the management of Steven Pressley, had a solid season in the Premiership last year, avoiding relegation comfortably. This Saturday, they will host Airdrie again at 15:00, and the team will be keen to make a strong statement in the group stage. Meanwhile, Annan Athletic will host Ross County in another Group D clash, while Clyde will not be involved this weekend.
Later in the day, Dundee United will travel to Stirling Albion for their Group B match at 17:30. After a challenging previous season where they were knocked out in the second round by Kilmarnock, Jim Goodwin’s side will be looking to bounce back and make a deeper run in this year's competition. Earlier that day, Arbroath will visit Spartans in another exciting match-up.
Falkirk, who finished sixth in the Premiership last season, enjoyed a strong group stage campaign last year, going unbeaten before their eventual loss to Celtic in the second round. This time, they will be eager to make an impact as they prepare for their group stage games. However, several teams, including Aberdeen, Kilmarnock, and St Johnstone, will have to wait until Tuesday, July 14, to start their group campaigns, as they sit out this weekend's fixtures.
