Hilgers Misses Training Without Permission, Twente Plans Discussion


Mees Hilgers has made headlines this week for his absence at FC Twente. The defender was expected to join the rest of the squad for the first two training sessions but failed to show up. This was confirmed by Twente in a statement to Tubantia. On Monday, Hilgers, who is recovering from a cruciate ligament injury, was supposed to make his first appearance since the summer break, but he was absent without explanation. He also missed a second day of training at Twente's training complex. His absence has raised concerns within the club's management. "Mees Hilgers is a contracted player of FC Twente. He should have been at training. It is clear that we will have to discuss this with him," said the club's response. This incident marks another conflict between Hilgers and the club he has been with since childhood. Previously, the Indonesian international refused to extend his expiring contract, leading to coach John van den Brom not selecting him for matches. Consequently, Hilgers went several months without playing, faced a failed transfer, and suffered a serious injury. In May, his contract was automatically extended for another season after he failed to notify the club before the deadline of May 16. In September, Hilgers expressed his confusion about his situation at Twente during an interview with VI PRO.
