Man United's Manuel Ugarte Stretchered Off During World Cup Clash

Manuel Ugarte suffered a knee injury during the World Cup match against Spain, leading to his team's elimination and raising concerns about his future with Manchester United.
Manuel Ugarte was carried off on a stretcher as his Uruguay team faced elimination from the World Cup on Friday, leaving the field in tears. The Manchester United midfielder collided with teammate Mathias Olivera while pursuing Spain’s Pedri, injuring his knee after catching his studs in the turf. Despite being treated on the pitch, Ugarte was unable to continue, and while he was down, Spain took the lead through Alex Baena, just before half-time, aided by a mistake from goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. Ugarte was visibly emotional, wiping away tears and covering his face with his shirt as he was taken off the field.

In a dramatic finish, Uruguay's Agustin Canobbio received a straight red card in added time, as tensions escalated in the game. Ultimately, the 1-0 defeat confirmed Uruguay's exit from the tournament, with Spain topping the group and Cape Verde astonishingly advancing in second place. Uruguay’s two points left them short of qualifying as one of the best third-placed teams.
Ugarte's injury could also impact potential transfer plans, as Manchester United was reportedly considering offloading him after a season where he made only eight Premier League starts. Speculation about a possible move to Serie A may now be uncertain, with the likelihood of a summer exit diminishing. Spain, too, had injury worries during the match, with substitutes Yeremy Pino and Nico Williams both sustaining injuries.
