Background
Kylian Mbappe, a standout player for Paris Saint-Germain, is currently in the spotlight as he prepares for the Ballon d'Or ceremony after winning the Onze d'Or. His previous success in both awards in 2022 adds to the anticipation, but the recent history of the awards suggests that he may face challenges in replicating that achievement. The competition from other top players, including those from La Liga clubs, will be a significant factor in the upcoming decision.
Why this matters
Kylian Mbappe's recent win of the Onze d'Or 2026 highlights his status as one of the top players in European football. However, historical trends indicate that winning this accolade does not guarantee success at the Ballon d'Or, with many recent winners failing to secure both titles in the same year. This raises questions about how voters perceive achievements across different competitions, particularly in the context of La Liga football.

This year, Vinicius Junior became another example of this phenomenon. Despite being named the Onze d'Or winner for his pivotal contributions to Real Madrid's Champions League and La Liga titles, he finished second to Rodri in the Ballon d'Or voting. The last time both awards aligned was when Ousmane Dembele achieved the double in 2025 after a remarkable season with PSG.
Despite the historical patterns, Mbappe's performance in the 2025-2026 season has been nothing short of exceptional. He finished as the top scorer in La Liga with 25 goals and also topped the Champions League charts with 15 goals. Furthermore, during the 2026 World Cup, Mbappe showcased his talent by scoring 10 goals, claiming the Golden Boot, and becoming the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals across three tournaments.
In a recent interview with Onze Mondial, Mbappe expressed his gratitude to those who voted for him. "I want to thank everyone who voted for me. Being recognized this way is very meaningful," he said. He emphasized that the award is a recognition of his hard work throughout the year and a source of motivation to continue striving for excellence.
As he continues to evolve as a player, Mbappe noted that he is focusing on understanding the game on a deeper level, moving beyond just speed and instinct. "I don't think of myself as a chameleon but more as a global citizen," he remarked, reflecting on his journey from Bondy to becoming one of the world's top footballers.
What happens next
As the Ballon d'Or ceremony approaches, all eyes will be on whether Mbappe can break the trend and secure both honors this year. With fierce competition from players like Lionel Messi and Erling Haaland, the outcome remains uncertain. Fans and analysts alike will be keen to see if Mbappe's stellar performances can sway the voters in his favor, especially given the historical context of these prestigious awards.
