In a reflective analysis following Portugal's 0-0 draw with Colombia in the group stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026, head coach Roberto Martinez emphasized the importance of possession and strategic decision-making. The match, part of the third round of the group stage, saw Portugal struggling to impose their style against a Colombian side adept at counter-attacks and physical play. "We allowed Colombia to play their game. They thrive on counter-attacks and duels," Martinez observed. He noted that Portugal needed to maintain better control over the game and the ball, which was crucial for showcasing the individual talents of their players. "If we don't control the ball, we lose part of our players' individual talent. This match offers a valuable learning experience," he added. Despite the draw, Martinez remains optimistic about the team's self-critical nature and readiness to improve. Looking ahead to their upcoming match against Croatia, Martinez expressed a desire for victories with a commanding scoreline while acknowledging the team's current record of two draws and one win in the tournament. "We aim to win every game 3-0 and control matches, but the reality is we have three games behind us, with two draws and one win. The team is fully prepared for the next match," he concluded, as reported by A Bola.
