June 18, 2026 · Marta Aguilar
Lionel Scaloni, Argentina's head coach, praised Lionel Messi for becoming the all-time World Cup top scorer and expressed satisfaction with the team's strong start to the tournament, contrasting it with their previous World Cup experience.
Lionel Scaloni was full of admiration for Lionel Messi's historic achievement, as the Argentine superstar became the all-time top scorer in World Cup history. The Argentina head coach was particularly pleased with his team's strong start, contrasting it with their previous World Cup opening defeat against Saudi Arabia. "I have no words to describe Messi," Scaloni remarked after the match where Messi netted three times. "For twenty years, we've been accustomed to his brilliance, and he continues to inspire everyone who watches him play."

Argentina's defeat in the opening match of the last World Cup in Qatar lingered in their minds, but this result has now brought calm as they look ahead. "We knew it would be tough, playing against a team that plays well," continued Scaloni. "Despite the final score, it was a challenging match. The first game is always difficult; it affects you." The early decision of the match allowed Scaloni to rest some players, a strategy he hopes to continue throughout the group stage. "We're taking it match by match. The team is happy; we've been able to give many players game time. Hopefully, we win the next game so everyone can be available for the third group match."
On Monday at 19:00 (Netherlands time), Argentina will face Austria, followed by the final group match against Jordan in the early hours of Sunday. Messi will have two more opportunities to take sole possession of the record he currently shares with Miroslav Klose.
