Switzerland secured a historic 2-0 victory over Algeria, breaking an 88-year streak without a World Cup knockout stage win.
In a historic match at the FIFA World Cup 2026, Switzerland ended a long-standing curse by winning a World Cup knockout stage game for the first time since 1938. Under the guidance of Murat Yakin, the Swiss team defeated Algeria 2-0, with goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye. Embolo opened the scoring just 10 minutes into the match, while Ndoye added another goal at the start of the second half. Vladimir Petkovic, managing Algeria, couldn't lead his team past his native country. Despite Algeria's efforts, Switzerland's solid performance ensured their advancement to the round of 16, where they will face the winner between Colombia and Ghana. This victory marks a significant milestone for Switzerland, overcoming an 88-year period without a win in a World Cup knockout match, the last being against Germany in 1938.
