Murat Ekrem Çimen, a well-known commentator for the Turkish public broadcaster TRT, faced suspension after a significant error during his commentary on the World Cup 2026 match between Iran and New Zealand, which ended in a 2-2 draw. For the initial four minutes of the match, Çimen mistakenly switched the identities of the two teams, attributing the actions of the Iranian players to the New Zealand team and vice versa. This confusion was partly due to the team jerseys, with Iran in white and New Zealand in their traditional black. The mistake continued until a close-up shot of Iranian forward Mehdi Taremi led to the realization of the error. Clips of the blunder quickly spread across social media and Turkish media, causing embarrassment for the broadcaster. TRT issued a stern statement, apologizing to viewers and announcing a disciplinary procedure against Çimen, suspending him for the remainder of the tournament. The broadcaster emphasized that such a mistake is unacceptable from a professional with over 30 years of experience in sports journalism.
