Union Berlin's victory against SV Elversberg marks a crucial turning point in their Bundesliga season, ending a dismal winless streak. The performance also recalled the familiar qualities that once made Union such an uncomfortable opponent for Bundesliga rivals. Their physical approach, commitment to second balls, and renewed effectiveness from set pieces ultimately proved decisive. Substitute Livan Burcu delivered the winning goal in the 81st minute, striking from the edge of the penalty area after a corner had been cleared. His effort took a decisive deflection off Elversberg midfielder Felix Keidel before finding the net.
Union captain Rani Khedira expressed satisfaction with the collective defensive effort post-match. "Everybody was fighting for each other," Khedira told Sky Germany. "We played Union football. No one felt alone on the pitch. With that [such a performance], one can deliver such a game." His comments marked a notable change from his reaction to Union's earlier defeats, when he emphasized the importance of adapting to a new tactical setup.
Matchwinner Burcu also shared an entertaining account of the encouragement he received before entering as a substitute. Managing director Horst Heldt had foretold that Burcu would make a difference in this match. "Horst is a good advisor to me," Burcu noted, accepting his man-of-the-match award. "He's always stood behind me and motivates me. Before I entered, he told me that I would score one." The team's spirit was evident in Burcu's celebration, emphasizing the familial atmosphere in the locker room.
Lustrinelli, reflecting on the victory, stressed the importance of incremental progress rather than viewing it as a complete turnaround. "We need the wins," he said, pleased with the clean sheet after a challenging defensive start to the season. Union's next challenge will be significantly tougher, as unbeaten Borussia Dortmund visit the Alte Försterei next Saturday, providing a critical test of whether these improvements are sustainable. For now, Lustrinelli can take encouragement from this first meaningful reward for his patience. The house is still under construction, and the bicycle remains rather unsteady, but Union have finally managed to stay upright long enough to get somewhere.
What happens next
Following this victory, Union Berlin will look to capitalize on their newfound confidence in upcoming fixtures. The match impact of this win could be significant as they face tougher opponents in the Bundesliga, requiring continued tactical refinement and player cohesion. Lustrinelli's side will need to maintain their focus and determination to ensure this victory is not an isolated success but part of a broader turnaround in their season outlook.
