VAR Controversy: Kane's Retaken Penalty Against Croatia
June 19, 2026 · Pedro DĂaz
Harry Kane's penalty against Croatia was retaken due to VAR intervention after the goalkeeper moved off his line early. Kane scored on the second attempt, showcasing his penalty-taking skills.
Harry Kane gave England the lead against Croatia from the penalty spot, thanks to a crucial intervention by the video assistant referee (VAR). The penalty was awarded in the ninth minute following a foul by Luka Modric on Noni Madueke. Kane's initial attempt was saved by Croatia's goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic, but VAR determined that Livakovic had moved off his line prematurely, giving Kane another opportunity. According to the rules, a goalkeeper must have one foot on or above the line when a penalty is taken. Additionally, Manchester City's Josko Gvardiol entered the box too early and impacted the play, preventing Madueke from capitalizing on the rebound. This warranted the retake, which Kane converted successfully.

Interestingly, Kane experienced a similar situation earlier in the season with Bayern Munich in the Champions League, where a penalty was saved after the keeper stepped off the line. Following the match, Kane explained that he anticipated the goalkeeper's movement, saying, "I knew that if I stopped, there was a good chance he'd come too far forward." Former England defender Conor Coady praised Kane's penalty skills, highlighting his clever approach to reading goalkeepers. Ex-Spurs and England goalkeeper Paul Robinson noted Kane's confidence and technique, emphasizing his ability to learn from previous attempts and adjust accordingly, which he showcased in this game.
