World Cup 2026: Sibling Rivals Competing for Different Teams
June 20, 2026 · Alexandro Gómez
The article discusses the unique situation of sibling rivals competing for different nations in the World Cup, highlighting several pairs of brothers and their journeys in international football.
The World Cup presents a unique challenge for parents: two sons competing on opposing teams. This year, four sets of siblings are set to clash on football's grandest stage, including Desire and Guela Doue, who may face each other in the knockout rounds. Born in Angers, France, to a French mother and an Ivorian father, the brothers each took different international paths. Desire, 21, represents France, while Guela, 23, plays for Ivory Coast. "We tell each other everything and have no secrets," Desire shared with Telefoot. Their potential matchup could occur in Arlington, Texas, should both teams advance from their respective groups.
In a recent friendly, Ivory Coast triumphed over France, with Guela singing both national anthems before the match. Desire, who had just won the Champions League with Paris Saint-Germain, was an unused substitute. "It’s unfortunate I didn’t get to face my brother, but I’m glad he’s happy," Guela remarked afterwards. Historically, the World Cup has seen sibling matchups, the most notable being Jerome and Kevin Prince Boateng, who faced off in 2010 and 2014.

Other sibling pairs include the Williams brothers, Inaki and Nico, who both hail from the Basque region but represent different national teams. Nico, 23, starred in Spain’s Euro 2020 triumph, while Inaki, 32, plays for Ghana. Australia’s Harry Souttar, 27, will compete alongside his brother John, 29, who is part of the Scotland squad. Their mother is Australian, and Harry switched to Australia from the Scottish youth ranks in 2019.
Ghana's Derrick Luckassen, 30, is also at the tournament alongside his half-brother Brian Brobbey, 24, representing the Netherlands. Brobbey made a brief appearance in his team’s opening match against Japan. Additionally, Cape Verde’s Laros and Deroy Duarte are set to play together after Laros started against Spain and was replaced by his younger brother during the match.
Finally, Curacao, the smallest nation by size and population in World Cup history, features the Bacuna brothers, Leandro and Juninho. Their dream of playing together on the same pitch came true despite a heavy defeat to Germany. France's Lucas and Theo Hernandez are another notable sibling pair in the tournament, showcasing the unique family bonds that football fosters.
