Wilkinson, who is 39, has been at the helm of City's under-21 squad since Brian Barry-Murphy departed to manage Cardiff City in July 2025. His playing career saw him at clubs like Hull City, York City, and Boston United before transitioning to a coaching role at Sheffield Wednesday's academy. In 2018, Wilkinson made a move to Manchester City, where he successfully led the under-18 team to a Premier League National title in his debut season.
