Clarke Fears World Cup Exit After Loss to Brazil

Scotland's aspirations for advancing to the knockout stage of the World Cup took a severe hit following their 3-0 defeat to Brazil. Despite a slim chance of progressing, pessimism prevails among the team. Head coach Steve Clarke, captain Andy Robertson, and midfielder John McGinn voiced their concerns about the team's future in the tournament. Clarke, initially upset post-match, later remarked, "I think we're going home." He acknowledged that their own errors gifted Brazil the goals and, ultimately, the win they desired. "We created opportunities but failed to capitalize on them," Clarke stated, conceding that the better team won.

Clarke emphasized the players' commendable effort, especially given the challenging conditions. However, he admitted that to compete at this level, they must improve. "After starting well, one mistake cost us, and at this level, you get punished immediately," he added. Robertson shared a similar sentiment, expressing little hope for a favorable outcome. "If you ask me now, I don't think it's enough. The next few days will be tough. We didn't want to rely on other teams, but now we are. We've let ourselves down, and against teams like this, you can't make such mistakes," he said.

McGinn mentioned the need for a miracle to advance. "That's how it feels. We need a lot of luck. If we make it to the last 32, we have to play much better. Tonight, we've put ourselves in the worst possible position," he admitted. Currently, Scotland ranks seventh among the best third-placed teams, depending heavily on results from other groups. Only the top eight third-placed teams out of twelve advance to the knockout phase. The Scots are hoping for slip-ups from Ecuador, Curaçao, and Paraguay, among others, with outcomes in groups G, H, I, J, K, and L also crucial. The final group matches on Saturday will determine whether Scotland secures a spot in the last 32.
