Hull City Faces Urgent Financial Deadline to Avoid Points Deduction
June 26, 2026 · Pedro Fernández
Hull City is at risk of a Premier League points deduction unless they secure £6 million by the financial year's close due to previous overspending.
Hull City is on the brink of significant financial pressure as they prepare for their return to the Premier League after a decade. Following their thrilling 1-0 victory over Middlesbrough in the Championship play-off final, Hull faces a crucial financial challenge. The club must raise £6 million before the end of the financial year to comply with Profitability and Sustainability Rules, or face a potential points deduction as they re-enter England's top flight.
The club's owner, Turkish businessman Acun Ilicali, has openly acknowledged the financial strain resulting from last season's overspending. Hull is permitted to report losses up to £39 million over a three-year monitoring period, but without immediate financial adjustments, they risk breaching this threshold. Currently, the club has reported a pre-tax loss of £29.1 million across the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons.

Despite player sales helping to offset some of these losses, Hull's wage bill has risen to £36.7 million against a turnover of £25.8 million. The club must swiftly navigate these financial hurdles, as failing to secure the necessary funds before June 30 would result in a breach of regulations and a subsequent points deduction.
Hull City is exploring various options to raise the funds, including potential player sales. Key players such as Charlie Hughes have attracted interest, and the club may consider selling squad players like Abu Kamara and Mason Burstow. Hull remains optimistic about resolving these financial issues before the deadline, ensuring their return to the Premier League isn't marred by penalties.
