Marco Silva has been appointed as Benfica's new head coach following Jose Mourinho's departure to Real Madrid, with Silva's contract set to last until 2028.
Marco Silva has been confirmed as the new head coach of Benfica, following the departure of Jose Mourinho to Real Madrid. Silva, aged 48, recently concluded his tenure as manager of Fulham after his contract at Craven Cottage ended. Benfica has announced that they have "reached an agreement" with Silva, who will sign a contract running until the end of the 2027-28 season, with the possibility of an extension to 2028-29. Silva's managerial experience in England includes stints at Hull City, Watford, and Everton, making Fulham his fourth English club.

Jose Mourinho's exit from Benfica's Estadio da Luz has also been formalized. Real Madrid is set to pay £13 million (15 million euros) in compensation for Mourinho, who will return to the Bernabeu. A statement from Benfica noted that "the coach [Mourinho] has given his agreement to this hiring," thus marking the end of Mourinho's second tenure as Benfica's manager. Mourinho initially took charge of Benfica in September and guided the team to a third-place finish in the Primeira Liga, remaining unbeaten throughout the league campaign. During his previous spell at Real Madrid between 2010 and 2013, Mourinho won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Super Cup.
Silva's appointment at Benfica signals a new chapter for the club as they aim to build on their recent successes under Mourinho. Fans will be eager to see how Silva's leadership will shape the team's future and whether he can replicate his successes from his time in England. Mourinho's return to Real Madrid also adds an intriguing storyline to the upcoming season, with expectations high for his second stint at the club.
