FIFA to Introduce New VAR Technology at World Cup

FIFA plans to implement innovative offside technology at the upcoming World Cup, allowing for faster decisions. The technology could be adopted by the Premier League in the future.
FIFA is set to revolutionize the decision-making process at the World Cup with the introduction of advanced semi-automated offside technology. Unveiled by Dale Johnson, this new system will provide real-time audio alerts to assistant referees when a player is over 10cm offside. This marks a significant improvement from the previous system, which detected offsides at a margin of 50cm. While the final decision remains with the officials, the technology aims to expedite the process, allowing for quicker flag-raising by assistants.
Beyond offsides, the tournament will also employ 3D scans to produce clearer offside animations and technology to verify if the ball has exited play before a goal. The system includes real-time 3D recreations of incidents to aid in line-of-sight judgments, offering VAR officials and TV audiences the perspective of the goalkeeper to assess offside impacts. Additionally, a chip in the match ball will help determine the last player touch before a corner, though this feature won’t be seen in the Premier League next season due to the lack of a similar ball. However, other technological advancements could be integrated into English football, contingent on their success at the World Cup.
