FIFA World Cup 2026 to Feature New Offside Technology

FIFA is set to revolutionize offside decision-making at the 2026 World Cup with the introduction of advanced semi-automated technology for video assistant referees (VAR). This new system aims to accelerate the decision process, enabling assistant referees to raise their flags more swiftly. The technology includes a real-time audio alert for players offside by more than 10cm, a significant improvement over previous systems that only flagged players offside by 50cm or more.

Despite these advancements, the human element remains as officials will determine when to raise the flag. FIFA assures that multiple failsafe measures are in place to prevent errors, although the technology has its limitations in detecting the closest offsides or when players are too close together. It applies strictly to positional offside calls, not subjective ones where player interference is in question.

The new system is expected to alleviate some frustrations for fans and players, reducing unnecessary play and potential injury risks. Notably, in May 2025, a delayed offside flag incident resulted in Nottingham Forest's Taiwo Awoniyi being critically injured, highlighting the need for such advancements.

Additionally, FIFA will employ AI-enabled 3D avatars for all players, enhancing the precision of offside decisions. This involves scanning all 1,248 players from the 48 teams participating, with the process taking place during pre-tournament photo shoots. Moreover, technology to verify if the ball was out of play before a goal will also be in use, providing 3D animations similar to goalline technology to clarify contentious decisions.

FIFA's expanded 'Real-time 3D Recreation' will assist VAR in making quick 'line-of-sight' judgements for offsides, offering virtual feeds to both VAR officials and TV audiences. This aims to resolve disputes about whether a goalkeeper's view was obstructed during play, providing an additional tool for accuracy in officiating.
