Germany's preparation for the FIFA World Cup 2026 faces a hurdle as star goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's participation in the final pre-tournament test is in serious doubt. As of Thursday, Neuer has not been able to join team training, raising concerns about his availability. He was recalled by national coach Julian Nagelsmann to stand as Germany's number one in the tournament set to take place across the USA, Canada, and Mexico. In Neuer's absence, Oliver Baumann, who guarded the net during qualifying matches, may retain his spot for the upcoming test against the USA. Neuer's fitness issues stem from a calf injury sustained in his last Bundesliga appearance, which also ruled him out of Bayern Munich's DFB-Pokal final victory. With Neuer still in the recovery phase, there's a possibility that his return to the national team could coincide directly with a World Cup match, Germany's opener against Curacao on June 14.
