Motherwell Appoints Alfred Johansson as New Manager

Alfred Johansson has been appointed as the new manager of Motherwell, succeeding Jens Berthel Askou, with the aim of building on last season's success.
Alfred Johansson is set to lead Motherwell as their new manager, aiming to build on the success achieved last season at Fir Park. The 35-year-old Swede takes over from Jens Berthel Askou, who left the club after guiding them to a commendable fourth place in the Scottish Premiership before moving to Toulouse. Johansson previously managed Rosenborg in Norway for two-and-a-half years before his dismissal in May.
Chairman Kyrk Macmillan emphasized that the club utilized a "data-driven process" to identify Johansson, similar to what was done for Askou and former boss Michael Wimmer. "The data plays a key role to ensure the game model aligns with how we want to play and continues our evolution, but the process is also blended with ensuring we bring good people to the club," Macmillan stated. He expressed confidence in Johansson's ability to lead the team, describing him as a determined and ambitious young manager who is eager to continue the club's recent success.

Under Askou, Motherwell accumulated 61 points from 38 league matches, winning 16 games. Johansson, who has a background in youth coaching but did not play professionally, has previously served as the academy manager at Djurgardens and held youth managerial roles at FC Copenhagen. He was appointed head coach at Rosenborg in December 2023, achieving 71 victories in 131 matches.
"I've analysed the club closely, and the direction that it's going in is of huge importance to me," Johansson remarked. "Last season was hugely successful, and I want to be able to carry this success forward. The squad of players we have is exciting, and we will get to work straight away." Motherwell's upcoming fixtures include a match against Havnar Boltfelag of the Faroe Islands in the Conference League second qualifying round on July 23 and their Premiership opener away to Hibernian on August 2.
