The Netherlands national team, led by captain Virgil van Dijk, is currently preparing in Kansas City for their World Cup 2026 group stage matches against Japan, Tunisia, and Sweden. Despite the sweltering heat, Van Dijk is unfazed, drawing on his previous experiences in similar climates. "I've played in these conditions before," he states. "The weather will be the same for everyone, so adapting is key. I hope all the pitches are as good as today's, since there were issues during the Club World Cup." However, the team's preparation has been less than ideal, with a loss to Algeria followed by a narrow victory over Uzbekistan thanks to Cody Gakpo's penalties, only to falter again against Uzbekistan's B-team. "It's not great that we haven't scored any field goals in the last two matches," Van Dijk admits. "We need to create that positive feeling by converting our chances and winning on Sunday." With 92 international caps, Van Dijk could reach 100 if the Netherlands triumphs in the tournament, though he emphasizes that personal milestones are not his focus. The defender praises the team's camaraderie in Kansas City. "We have talented players and a strong group dynamic. Ultimately, it's about results. Those of us who've been here for years are playing at the highest level, and we've achieved incredible things in our careers. Coming together to make the country proud is our primary goal. It's a great honor to be here and represent the nation."
