After an emotional rollercoaster with Liverpool, Virgil van Dijk is channeling his energy towards World Cup success. The Dutch captain opens up about team dynamics, his role, and valuable lessons learned. "You need more than just good players at a tournament," he asserts. Van Dijk had only six days to process one of the most emotional seasons of his life and simultaneously gear up for the World Cup. He feels ready, though the grief from the tragic death of Liverpool teammate Diogo Jota will take longer to heal. "There will still be moments when I'll have to come to terms with everything," he reflects, acknowledging the difficult journey ahead. The season was marked by significant events, including Jota's passing and internal challenges at Liverpool, such as the clash between manager Arne Slot and star player Mohamed Salah, disappointing Premier League results, and early exits from the Champions League and FA Cup. "This was the toughest season of my career," Van Dijk admits, particularly on a mental level. The team's performance was inconsistent, and the season was filled with ups and downs. Despite the challenges, Van Dijk remains focused on a positive mindset for the World Cup, having spent time with family to recharge. Holding the captaincy of Liverpool, one of the world's most prestigious clubs, adds another layer of responsibility. "I take that role seriously because I love Liverpool," he says, noting the personal toll. At season's end, Liverpool finished fifth in the Premier League, securing a spot in the Champions League's competitive phase but not enough for Arne Slot to retain his position. Van Dijk remains tight-lipped about Slot's departure, focusing instead on the World Cup, which might be his last. "I am not thinking about whether this will be my last tournament," Van Dijk states.
