Atletico Madrid Pursues Grimaldo, Bayer Leverkusen Holds Firm
June 26, 2026 · Javier Molina
Atletico Madrid is interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen's Alejandro Grimaldo, but negotiations for a transfer fee have not progressed. Bayer is firm on their asking price, indicating they are willing to wait until Grimaldo's contract expires in 2027 if their demands are not met.
Atletico Madrid is looking to acquire Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen. However, as of now, there has been no significant advancement in the negotiations regarding the transfer fee. The dynamics of the market and the timing seem to be in favor of Bayer 04.
The situation has been generating some excitement since Atletico's interest in the Spanish World Cup participant became public. Reports have surfaced indicating that negotiations between the two clubs are underway, suggesting progress. It was mentioned that Bayer's CEO Fernando Carro traveled to Madrid for discussions, and similar claims were made about his colleague Simon Rolfes. Rolfes did indeed travel to Spain over the weekend, but it was for a wedding in Mallorca, and he returned on Monday. Carro, who resides in Madrid, is involved in the talks with Atletico, yet as of Tuesday morning, no real progress had been made.

Marca speculated that a deal could be struck for a fee around €20 million, including bonuses. However, this appears more as Atletico's hope rather than a consensus. Bayer 04 has communicated their stance clearly, specifying the amount they would accept for Grimaldo, who is under contract until the summer of 2027. Last week, Bayer established their internal threshold at €30 million for the left-back, indicating that any agreement would need to be in the range of €25 to €30 million.
The message to Atletico is clear: they must either meet the asking price or wait until Grimaldo's contract expires in 2027. This latter scenario is one that Bayer's management could accept, allowing them to monitor the negotiations with a degree of calm. In contrast, Atletico has faced complications in their pursuit of their primary target, Marc Cucurella, as local rivals Real Madrid secured the Spanish World Cup participant for €50 million from Chelsea.
Given the overall situation, Bayer is in a strong position regarding this negotiation. The number of high-profile alternatives for Atletico on this front is limited, and their costs are likely to be higher than Grimaldo's, who will turn 31 in September. The tightening left-back market plays into Bayer's hands, giving them time to prepare for a necessary successor to Grimaldo. The club has already identified Dayann Methali (20) from Toulouse and Arsene Kouassi (22) from Lorient as potential targets from Ligue 1.
