Matteo Ruggeri Faces Uncertain Future at Atlético Madrid
June 11, 2026 · Eva Fernández
Matteo Ruggeri, a key player for Atlético Madrid, could be set to leave the club as they target Marc Cucurella, potentially generating significant revenue from his transfer.
Matteo Ruggeri, who was the seventh most utilized player by Diego Simeone at Atlético Madrid last season, is facing an uncertain future with the club. Despite his significant contribution of 3,485 minutes over 47 matches and providing 7 assists, the Spanish club is considering his departure. This potential move is driven by Atlético Madrid's interest in signing Marc Cucurella, which could see Ruggeri lose his starting position. Director Mateu Alemany aims to resolve long-standing defensive issues on the left flank, even if it means sacrificing Ruggeri, the current specialist in that role.

According to reports from MARCA, even if the Cucurella deal doesn't materialize, Ruggeri's future remains uncertain as Atlético's management is keen on making a major signing in that position. Julio Diaz is considered a reliable alternative for less demanding matches, leaving Ruggeri in a precarious spot. The potential sale of the former Atalanta player could allow Atlético to recoup the €17 million spent on him, with his current value estimated at €28 million. Several Italian clubs hold Ruggeri in high regard, with Roma being a strong contender to acquire him, especially as he could reunite with his former coach, Gian Piero Gasperini, in Bergamo.
