June 11, 2026 · Isabel Ruiz
Roy Keane and Bruno Fernandes resolved their dispute over misquoted comments in a mature conversation, addressing concerns about individual versus team priorities.
Roy Keane clarified his comments with Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes after a misunderstanding over Fernandes' remarks. Keane had misquoted Fernandes, suggesting the Portuguese midfielder was more focused on personal achievements than team success. This led to Fernandes accusing Keane of lying about his comments. The issue arose after Fernandes set a record for the most assists in a Premier League season, achieving his 21st assist against Brighton on the last day of the 2025-26 season.

On The Overlap podcast, Keane questioned Fernandes' priorities, referring to him as part of a "circus act." Keane incorrectly claimed that Fernandes had said he should have shot instead of assisting in a previous game against Nottingham Forest. Fernandes clarified that his actual statement was about making the right decisions for the team's benefit.
After the misunderstanding, Fernandes expressed his desire to meet Keane, which led to a "nice, mature conversation" as reported on the Stick to Football podcast. Keane acknowledged that sometimes comments made during broadcasts can be misinterpreted and that it was important to clear the air. He emphasized that while he doesn't frequently engage with players, it was beneficial to have a direct discussion with Fernandes. Keane expressed that he enjoyed the conversation and felt better afterward, hoping Fernandes did as well.
